Early Life
Durk Derrick Banks is born on the 19th October, 1992 in Chicago. His parents were divorced when he was seven years old. He took on responsibility early in life as his dad was incarcerated when he was only seven years old.
As a child growing up in a violent neighborhood, Lil Durk remembered having nothing to eat at home. He told a magazine that his childhood left him with a deep impression.
Career
When Lil Durk first started out in the rap game, he was affiliated with the Glo Gang record company. But because of this, he didn’t get any recognition from the industry. Because of this, Lil Durk decided to start creating his own image in the rap scene.
After Lil Durk’s successful debut single “Ooouuu” got him signed to 300 Entertainment, he released another single titled “I Got It”. His second single became an instant hit when it reached number one on iTunes’ Hip Hop/R&B charts.
His first major success came when he released his first single, ‘Remember My Name’, which became an instant hit. He went on to release his second single, ‘The World Is Yours’, which topped the charts.
The following year, Lil Durk dropped his sixth mixtape, titled ‘300 Days, 300 Nights.’ One of its singles, “My Beyoncé,” was used to advertise the album.
The single featured his girlfriend Deja Loaf. Critics called the song “Single” a refreshing change from his previous albums which mainly chronicled drug violence in his hometown.
He had a successful sophomore album, but he could’ve done even better if he’d focused less on making music for himself and more on promoting his new project.
Legal issues
After being accused of shooting at police officers in 2012, Durk was arrested again in 2013 for allegedly shooting at police officers.
Hours before a scheduled concert performance, a shooting incident took place outside of a theatre where Duran Duran were performing. One person died during the incident. Duran Duran did not appear for their scheduled performance.
On August 19, 2017, Durk was cleared for violating his probation after he was arrested for gun possession.
On June 6, 2019, Lil Durk was arrested on attempted murder and armed robbery charge. According to prosecutors, he stole a Jeep Cherokee and $40,000 from a man outside an Atlanta restaurant. He was later freed on $250,000 bond.
Controversies
Durk was embroiled in a feud with rival Joseph “Lil JoJo” Coleman after he released his song “LS Anthem”. The Brick Squad, not to be confused with rap group The Brick Squad, responded by releasing their own diss track called “The Block Is Hotter Than You.”
After signing with both Universal Music’s sister companies, Def Jam Recordings (which was founded by Jay Z) and Interscope (founded by Jimmy Iovine), Durk became estranged from his former boss, Chief Keef.
After Durk disses King L on his “Chiraq” remake, L responds by calling Durk and Keef’s beef a “big mistake”. But after Durk calls out King L for dissing him, he says, “It was a big mistake.”
After Durk released his song “Lil Durk” in 2013, he had an ongoing feud with rapper The Game.
